It's Amy here. Again. I slept for 6 hours and the liquor woke me up. No, I am not sick or anything but I am slightly hungover and the smell of bacon wafting up from breakfast downstairs intrigues me. I figure I am just gearing up for our days in Vegas with David Irish Gordon :)
Anyways, as I mentioned last night, after Bruges we hit up the town of Trier which is known for its Roman sites. It is actually supposed to be one of the oldest cities in Germany. The amphitheater was built in the late 2nd century AD and actually held up to 20,000 spectators at a time. We were able to go underneath the arena floor and see where the animals, props and to-be-eaten enemies were housed. Did you know arena comes from the Latin word for sand? We learned that! We also learned about vomitoriums (Latin for spew) - the vomitoriums were basically the main entrance and exit points for all the spectators to spew out of. Neat! Underneath the arena the Romans also constructed a lift to raise animals/people to the main stage. The original wood from the lift is still in place as it has been preserved by moisture. Very cool.
After Trier we drove to Heidelberg and that is where we are right now. It is very beautiful here and we may stay another day instead of heading to Lake Constance. I am torn as Maja Serb Gordon highly recommended the lake. Let's see if the liquor makes Lance want to drive today.
Okay, enough jibber jabber. Picture time with some shots from Lance's phone.
The above were from our walk about Trier.
In Bruges at a pub around the corner from where we were staying, the bathroom walls were made of chalkboard so I memorialized Lamy in chalk. And by memorialized, I mean it was likely erased that night at closing.
Super creepy dolls in Bruges.
Panorama of Markt in Bruges. Speaking of creepy, note I don't have a left hand!
More of the Markt at night.
Okay, so this is where things started to go wrong last night. We found a bar that only served shooters. Do you see that last one? SWAN SHOTS! Please note the Swan shot was actually a two shooter drink. See I have one in both hands. This is what I do for friends!
After the Swan, we scanned the menu for any other tempting treats and found a Biene Maja. Right in the middle of this picture. It was fate.

So I drank a Biene Maja and she was good! Slightly creamy....but good!
Okay, Lance has risen and is ready for bacon too. We need to decide whether to stay or move along over some coffee and eggs.
..........
We are back after breaky and have decided to stay another night in Heidelberg. The liquor may have been a factor. Who feels like driving after Swan shots and creamy Maja's?
Here are some more photos from Lance's phone below.
A shot from the Porta Nigra, a Roman Gate in Trier, that was later converted into a church.
Above is a shot from our 24 hour travel day from Calgary. This was at the Antwerp train station. Call me Saddlebags Gillespie.
Panorama shot looking up to Schloss Heidelberg
And a panorama shot within Schloss Heidelberg.
More on beautiful Heidelberg to follow. Bacon has made us sleepy and it is nap time.
Later!
Lamy
